No hot water? What it usually means and what to check first

General home information from Prufloop. Updated October 28, 2026.

The short answer. When a tank water heater stops making hot water, the usual causes are a tripped breaker or failed heating element (electric), a pilot or ignition problem (gas), a bad thermostat, or a tank that has reached the end of its life. Check power or gas supply first. If the tank is leaking from the bottom, it usually needs replacing.
Safety first. If you smell gas, don't touch switches or the water heater. Leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.

Asking an AI assistant to book it

Once Prufloop launches (planned for Q4 2026 around Charlotte), you'll be able to ask the AI assistant you use something like this, and it can book a verified pro at a posted price in a real open slot. This is how it's planned to work; no assistant is connected yet.

Example request. “My electric water heater stopped making hot water and the breaker is fine. Book a licensed plumber near Matthews this week at a posted diagnostic fee.”

Before a job is booked, you see the pro's posted price, including any trip or diagnostic fee. Anything extra needs your OK first. When the work is done, you confirm it's fixed with a quick text. That's Proof of Done™.

Questions

Should I repair or replace an old water heater?

If the tank is leaking or near the end of its usual 8 to 12 year life, replacement is usually the better spend. Element or thermostat failures on a younger tank are often worth repairing.

Why do I have some hot water but it runs out fast?

On electric tanks, one of the two heating elements has often failed. Heavy sediment buildup can also reduce capacity.

Can my AI assistant book a plumber for this through Prufloop?

Not yet. Prufloop is being built so the AI assistant you already use can book a verified plumber at a posted price, starting with the Charlotte-area pilot planned for Q4 2026 in Mecklenburg, Union, Cabarrus, Iredell, Gaston and Lincoln counties in North Carolina, plus York and Lancaster counties in South Carolina. No AI assistant is connected yet.
