Thermostat screen blank? Batteries, breakers and the float switch
General home information from Prufloop. Updated October 28, 2026.
What you can safely check
- Replace the thermostat batteries if it uses them.
- Check the breaker for the furnace or air handler and its power switch.
- Check the drain pan and float switch near the indoor unit. If the pan is full, the drain line is likely clogged.
- If you recently installed a smart thermostat, it may need a common (C) wire for steady power.
When to call a HVAC tech
- The screen stays blank with power on
- The drain line keeps clogging
- A smart thermostat install isn't working
- The system runs without stopping or won't start
What a HVAC tech will usually do
- Tests the low-voltage transformer and control board fuse
- Clears and treats the condensate drain
- Adds a C wire or adapter for smart thermostats

Questions
Why would a clogged drain shut off my AC?
A float switch shuts the system off when the drain pan fills, to keep water from overflowing into your ceiling or floor.
Do smart thermostats work with every system?
Most do, but many need a C wire for constant power, and heat pumps need the right wiring setup.
Can my AI assistant book a HVAC tech for this through Prufloop?
Not yet. Prufloop is being built so the AI assistant you already use can book a verified HVAC tech at a posted price, starting with the Charlotte-area pilot planned for Q4 2026 in Mecklenburg, Union, Cabarrus, Iredell, Gaston and Lincoln counties in North Carolina, plus York and Lancaster counties in South Carolina.
