Outlet not working? Check the GFCI first
General home information from Prufloop. Updated October 28, 2026.
What you can safely check
- Press Reset on GFCI outlets in nearby bathrooms, the kitchen, the garage and outside. One GFCI can protect several outlets.
- Flip nearby wall switches. Some outlets are switched for lamps.
- Check the breaker panel for a tripped breaker, including AFCI breakers with Test buttons.
- Plug in a lamp you know works to rule out the device.
When to call a electrician
- The outlet is dead after resetting GFCIs and breakers
- A GFCI won't reset or trips right away
- The outlet is loose, warm, scorched or buzzing
- Several outlets in different rooms quit at once
What a electrician will usually do
- Traces the circuit to find a loose or failed connection
- Replaces worn outlets and GFCIs
- Checks for overloaded or damaged wiring
Asking an AI assistant to book it
Once Prufloop launches (planned for Q4 2026 around Charlotte), you'll be able to ask the AI assistant you use something like this, and it can book a verified pro at a posted price in a real open slot. This is how it's planned to work; no assistant is connected yet.
Before a job is booked, you see the pro's posted price, including any trip or diagnostic fee. Anything extra needs your OK first. When the work is done, you confirm it's fixed with a quick text. That's Proof of Done™.
Questions
What is a GFCI outlet?
A ground fault circuit interrupter shuts off power in a fraction of a second if current leaks to ground, which protects you from shock in wet areas.
Why does my GFCI keep tripping?
Moisture, a faulty appliance or a wiring problem downstream. If unplugging everything doesn't help, have an electrician check it.
Can my AI assistant book a electrician for this through Prufloop?
Not yet. Prufloop is being built so the AI assistant you already use can book a verified electrician at a posted price, starting with the Charlotte-area pilot planned for Q4 2026 in Mecklenburg, Union, Cabarrus, Iredell, Gaston and Lincoln counties in North Carolina, plus York and Lancaster counties in South Carolina. No AI assistant is connected yet.
