What "done" means for a leaky pipe
A ride app knows the trip is over when you get out of the car. A plumbing job needs more than that. Here's how we prove it.
Why fixing a house is the hardest thing to automate
AI can write a legal brief in a minute. It still can't send someone you can trust to fix your furnace. Here's why.
Honesty and transparency at the center
When software picks who comes to your house, the rules it follows have to be out in the open.
How we've been thinking about the leap
The choices we made, the ones we threw out, and why we bet on finished jobs instead of leads.

FTC sues operators of a government impersonation scheme over deceptive ads and fake reviews
The FTC says a passport services company bought search ads that looked like the government and showed off a rating built on fake reviews. These are allegations; the court hasn't ruled.
Why it matters for pros: Regulators treat padded star ratings and pay-to-rank ads as deception. A record of real, verified jobs is the safer way to earn trust.
Angi announces its Q3 2026 earnings date and moves its Investor Day to 2027
Angi pushed its November Investor Day into the first half of 2027. New CEO Mike Steib will share an early strategy framework on the November 4 earnings call instead.
Why it matters for pros: The biggest lead marketplace is resetting under a new CEO. If you buy Angi leads, watch the November 4 call for changes to how leads are sold and priced.
ServiceTitan launches Homh and new capabilities at Pantheon 2026
Homh lets homeowners and their AI assistants, including ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, find and book selected ServiceTitan contractors with live availability. ServiceTitan also opened its Max agents to all residential contractors.
Why it matters for pros: The largest software company in the trades is building for AI assistants that book jobs directly. The move from buying leads to being bookable is real, and it's here.
FTC opens a broad inquiry into AI safety, including Anthropic and OpenAI
A senior FTC official confirmed an inquiry into the safety of AI systems, covering possible unfair or deceptive practices. It could lead to formal information demands.
Why it matters for pros: With regulators watching how assistants behave, assistants will lean harder on businesses whose license, insurance and work history can be checked.
OpenAI launches dots, always-on agents inside ChatGPT
At DevDay, OpenAI introduced dots: personal agents that work in the background toward goals a user sets. They launched for ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium users, with text messaging on the way.
Why it matters for pros: ChatGPT is moving from answering questions to running errands. Booking a service call is exactly that kind of errand.
AI agent Instinct raises $1B at a $10B valuation
Instinct, an invite-only agent that works over text message, raised $1 billion about a month after its last round. Its concierge feature phones businesses to book appointments when there's no online booking.
Why it matters for pros: Agents already call businesses to book for customers. The shop that answers, quotes and confirms reliably wins those jobs.
Amazon blocks Meta's Muse agent from its retail site
Amazon started blocking Muse after Meta declined to remove Amazon from the agent. Amazon says agents that buy for customers should operate openly and respect a merchant's choice to opt in.
Why it matters for pros: Big platforms are drawing lines over which agents can work through them. Pros do better on channels built to work with every assistant, not against them.
Research finds Google AI Mode sends fewer clicks to websites
A draft study from University of Pennsylvania and Northeastern researchers tracked about 1,100 people for a week. Google's AI search features cut clicks to outside sites.
Why it matters for pros: Fewer people click through to a contractor's website. Ranking your site matters less than being the business an AI can confidently pick and book.
California requires disclosure of AI-generated performers in ads
SB 1050 requires a clear disclosure when a video or audio ad uses AI-generated performers. Ads that break the rule can't keep running.
Why it matters for pros: If you use AI voices or spokespeople in your ads, plan on labeling them. States are treating undisclosed AI in marketing as a consumer protection issue.
Meta launches Muse, a personal AI agent for everyday tasks
Muse works in its own app or inside WhatsApp. Meta says it can fill out forms and negotiate for users on tasks like scheduling and shopping.
Why it matters for pros: Homeowners will ask an agent in WhatsApp to find and schedule a pro, and it will choose businesses it can verify and book.
Gemini adds connected apps including Angi and Thumbtack
At Made by Google, Gemini gained more than a dozen connected apps, including Angi and Thumbtack for home service pros and Zocdoc for doctor visits.
Why it matters for pros: Home service requests now start inside Google's assistant. The businesses an assistant can reach and book get the first shot at the job.
Perplexity overturns Amazon's injunction against its shopping agent
The Ninth Circuit threw out an injunction blocking Perplexity's Comet agent from Amazon, reasoning that the user, not Perplexity, was the one using the site. The lawsuit continues.
Why it matters for pros: Courts are starting to treat an agent acting for a customer as the customer. That strengthens the case for assistants booking services directly.
Google expands agentic booking in Search at I/O 2026
Search now handles live pricing, availability and booking for local services. For categories like home repair, people can ask Google to call businesses for them.
Why it matters for pros: Google may be the first caller asking your price and availability. Clear prices and quick, consistent answers decide who gets booked.
Thumbtack replaces keyword search with an AI experience
Homeowners describe the problem by photo, voice or text and get pros recommended on experience, ratings, availability and value. Full launch is planned for 2026.
Why it matters for pros: Matching is moving from keywords to proof of quality and open time. A strong track record and a real calendar count more than ad spend.
Survey: 25% of residential contractors use AI
A ServiceTitan survey of over 1,000 contractors found 25% use AI and 73% see early adoption as an edge. Phone calls are still 60% of first contacts; online booking is 13%.
Why it matters for pros: Most shops still can't be booked online. That leaves room for early movers to take the jobs AI assistants book.
Local Consumer Review Survey 2026
45% of US adults used ChatGPT or other AI tools for local business recommendations, up from 6% a year earlier.
Why it matters for pros: Nearly half of customers now ask AI who to hire. Being easy for an assistant to verify matters as much as your Google listing.
